SCHAEFFER (Iacobi Christiani). Fungorum qui in Bavaria et Pa - Lot 609
SCHAEFFER (Iacobi Christiani). Fungorum qui in Bavaria et Palatinatu circa Ratisbonam nascuntur. Regensburg, Impensis auctoris, 1780. 4 vols. in-4, half calf spotted with corners, spine ornamented, blond titles and tomasons, linings and endpapers of dominoté paper, red edges (Binding of the time). Third edition of one of the first mycological works illustrated in color: it includes 2 title-frontispices in bistre and 330 plates drawn by Sophie Beez, I. St. Loibel, Johann Rothermund, and Schauer, and engraved by various artists; they each contain several figures and have been superbly colored. The first, Schæffer (1718-1790), studied in detail a large number of species of the fungi of Bavaria and the Palatinate. Botanist, zoologist and theologian, he was a member of many learned societies, and his studies were also concerned with plants, insects, birds, electricity, colors, optics (he made prisms and lenses). On each page, the Latin text is followed by the German text. Nice copy on strong laid paper. Slight rubbing, corners dulled; volume I, a cracked spine; volume III, last quire badly bound. Volume III, foliation error, f. O1 does not exist (as in the copy kept in the Reserve of the BnF). Nissen BBI 1744.
