PINCHESNE (Étienne Martin de). The Chronicle of the Capons a - Lot 522
PINCHESNE (Étienne Martin de). The Chronicle of the Capons and Grouse of Le Mans. Published on the original manuscript of the National Library by Frédéric Lachèvre. Paris, Henri Leclerc, 1907. Large in-8, brown half-maroquin, spine ribbed, gilt head, covers. (Binding of the period). Faux-title, title, etched frontispiece by H. Manesse, lxxi pp., 259 pp., (3) ff. First edition of this account of pantagruelian meals: from 1656 to 1658, Pinchesne, chef de cuisine of the King's household from 1635 to 1668, summoned a few gastronomic friends for epic meals, in homage to Pierre Costar, the supplier of capons and grouse for these meals. The long introduction of this work contains the biographical notes of the guests; epistolary exchanges between Costar and Pinchesne about these meals follow; poems of various authors and quotations... mingling with this prose. Edition at 301 copies, at the expense of F. Lachèvre, n° 256. Copy entirely interleaved; only the first two added leaves carry notes (transcription of a letter from Raymond Toinet about this work). Minor foxing. One spine cracked, rubbing to the binding.
