PAULMIER (Julien de). Traité du vin et du sidre (sic). Caen, - Lot 226
PAULMIER (Julien de). Traité du vin et du sidre (sic). Caen, Pierre Le Chandelier, 1589. In-12, emerald green morocco, triple fillet, smooth spine decorated, red title-piece, gilt edges, interior roulette (18th century binding). Title, (5) ff, 87 ff. French first edition of the first work dealing with "the cultivation of apple trees on a large scale and the making of cider on an almost scientific basis." (Simon). The first edition of this rare work had appeared in Latin in Paris, in 1588, under the title De vino et pomaceo. This translation into French is due to Jacques de Cahaignes (1548-1612), pupil of Paulmier, and rector of the University of Caen. The translator gave some additions among which an "Apology against the use of wine and cider without water" (f. 28). Julien de Paulmier (1520-1588), doctor in the Faculty of Medicine of Paris, was physician to Charles IX and Henri III, before retiring to Normandy. A very attractive copy. Monogrammed bookplate. Some foxing. Title page partially disbound. A little short at the head. Trace of median fold at F1 which has slightly altered the printing. Vicaire, 651; Simon, Bachica, 489. - Missing in Jubert, "Le Cidre, biblographie exhaustive" (L'Émoi, 2010).
