The Buttes Chaumont
Print with dry stamp on mount
23 x 47 cm
Charles Marville photographed the Buttes-Chaumont around 1865-1866, during the park's development under the direction of Alphand and Haussmann.
Formerly a gypsum quarry and unsanitary landfill, the site was now a vast construction site where hills, caves and artificial lakes were being modeled. His photographs document this radical transformation: chaotic terrain, workers, earthworks, before the creation of the romantic park inaugurated in 1867.
These images are part of his mission as official photographer for the City of Paris.
