With polychrome decoration in the center representing the people of Rome seated around a feast in the center of important monuments and a large dresser, the inner edge, reverse and back of the piece decorated with grotesques, restorations, broken and reglued, chips
D. 35 cm.
Provenance:
Former Henri Blay collection (1861-1920).
This decoration is painted after a drawing attributed to Taddeo Zuccaro (1529-66) in the collections of the Musée de Louvre (INV. 30402).
A bowl inspired by this design is in the Musée du Louvre collection (INV. OA 1720).
The decoration on the reverse of this piece can be traced back to the workshops of Orazio or Flaminio Fontana, or to that of Antonio Patanazzi in Urbino, circa 1562-1880. For an important commentary on these workshops and grotesque decorations, see by Timothy Wilson, The Golden Age of "Italian" "Maiolica"/Painting, Turin, 2018, pp. 373-377.
