Italian majolica dish from the 16th century, possibly Rimini or Castel Durante Markings and inscriptions in manganese .C. / Rebecca ["ganal"] a Dio ["mamar"] / ["piacque"] "gravida" "fere" "nel" "fuo" / belly /.C. Polychrome decoration in full, depicting Rebecca giving birth to twins with numerous figures in an architectural interior with a bed and a fire in a high fireplace, ochre fillet on the rim, small chips and scratches. D. 30.5 cm. Provenance: Former Henri Blay collection (1861-1920). Book of Genesis 25, 21-26: Isaac pleaded with the Lord for his wife, for she was barren. And the Lord answered him: his wife Rebekah became pregnant. When her sons collided in her womb, she said, "Why must this happen to me?" and went to consult the Lord. The Lord said to her: "Two nations are in your womb. Two different peoples will come out of your womb: one will be stronger than the other, and the elder will serve the younger." When the day came for her to give birth, behold, there were twins in her womb! The first to emerge was red-haired, and covered with hair as if it were fur. He was given the name Esau. Then his brother came out, his hand clutching Esau's heel. He was given the name Jacob (i.e.: He's heeling). When they were born, Isaac was sixty years old.
