French school circa 1750 - Lot 56
French school circa 1750 Psyche's toilette Oil on canvas 80 x 120 cm Psyche's toilette is a recurring mythological theme in European art, inspired by the tale of Apuleius (The Metamorphoses), in which Psyche, the beautiful mortal beloved of Cupid, is prepared by servants or divinities for her divine nuptials. Among the most famous works is Psyché à sa toilette (1735-1736) by Charles-Joseph Natoire (1700-1777), in the New Orleans Museum of Art. Other versions exist, such as by Fedele Fischetti (tapestry cardboard, 18th-century Naples) or tapestries after François Boucher (Getty Museum). This motif symbolizes beauty, nuptial preparation and the transformation of the soul (Psyche meaning "soul" in Greek).
