Antoni TAPIES (1923-2012) - Lot 128
Antoni TAPIES (1923-2012) Shiny brown, circa 1975 Mixed media on paper mounted on canvas, signed lower right Tàpies, catalog raisonné by Anna Agusti, under number T-2205 50 x 65 cm Exhibitions : -Albight-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, USA, 1975. -Antoni Tàpies, The McNay Art Museum, San Antonio, USA, 1977. - Martha Jackson Gallery, New York. The sand paintings of Antoni Tàpies (1923-2012), a major figure in Spanish Art Informel and matiérisme, incorporated sand (arena) as early as the 1950s to create thick, rough, tactile surfaces. He mixes oil, glue, resin, marble dust and sand to obtain cracked, scratched or incised reliefs, evoking worn walls, traces of time, silent protest under Francoism and the raw materiality of the earth. These works, often monochrome or earthy (ochre, grey, black), bear enigmatic signs (crosses, letters, graffiti). Sand symbolizes humility, permanence and the poetic transformation of matter.
