Alexandre-Evariste FRAGONARD - Lot 41
Alexandre-Evariste FRAGONARD (Grasse- 1780 - Paris- 1850) Man burning a letter in a fireplace Oil on canvas (lined) Signed lower right: A. Fragonard 55.3 x 45.6 cm Bibliography: Rébecca Duffeix, Alexandre-Evariste Fragonard, Paris 2022, P63, pp.204-205. Son of the famous Jean-Honoré, Alexandre -Evariste Fragonard entered David's studio at the age of twelve (on September 19, 1792 to be exact) to follow his teaching, and made his official debut at the Salon in 1793, where he continued to exhibit regularly until 1842. Throughout his career, he was prolific in various fields of artistic creation: history painting (from Antiquity to contemporary times), opera costumes, projects for Sèvres (from 1804 to 1839. Picturesque and romantic journeys in ancient France, tapestry and wallpaper projects, grand decors (for Lucien Bonaparte, the Palais Bourbon, the Louvre). In his historical paintings, the artist showed a clear preference for subjects relating to the Renaissance, mainly French, and the intrigues of the Valois court. We have been unable to identify the subject represented here, which the costumes place at the end of the sixteenth century, the ermine-lined coat of the male figure indicating royal ancestry, while the interior in which the scene depicted takes place is anything but palatial. Could this be a gallant episode outside the marriage of one of the last Valois, such as Charles IX and Marie Touchet?
