Jacob George STRUTT - Lot 37
Jacob George STRUTT (Great Britain 1790-1864) - View of Florence, signed lower left and located Rome - Naples Pair of gouaches, one signed and dated 1845, the other signed in the same frame 15 x 26 cm each Jacob George Strutt (1784-1867), a British painter and engraver of landscapes in the style of John Constable, developed a marked Italianate style during his extended stay in Italy. After living in Lausanne (Switzerland) from ~1830, he traveled with his son Arthur John Strutt to France and Switzerland (1835-1837), then settled in Italy, where they established a studio in Rome (notably at 52 Via del Babuino in 1849). Here he painted and engraved romantic views: ancient ruins, majestic pines, oak trees associated with Tasso. Two works were sent from Italy: The Ancient Forum, Rome (1845) and Tasso's Oak, Rome (1851, engraving and drawings). His stay reinforced his interest in Mediterranean light and monumental trees, influencing his picturesque compositions. He returned to England in 1851, but died in Rome (circa 1864-1867).
