Christian-Louis-Marie COLIN DELABIOCHAYE - Lot 30
Christian-Louis-Marie COLIN DELABIOCHAYE (Chateaubriant - 1750 - Rennes - 1813) The delivery of the letter Paper mounted on canvas, signed and dated lower right L.Colin de la Biochaye 1790 47.5 x 42.5 cm Originally an officer in the Royal Artillery Regiment, Colin de la Biochaye succeeded his father in 1778 as President of the Requests at the Parliament of Brittany. He sold this position in 1785 to devote himself to painting, painting and drawing numerous interior scenes evoking the life of the Rennes nobility at the end of the Ancien Régime, as well as landscapes and delicate still lifes. In 1794, along with miniaturist Jean Baptiste Pasté, he was appointed to draw up inventories of the artistic and scientific collections confiscated from émigrés and religious communities. He drew up the inventory of the Robien collections, which are the founding nucleus of the Musée de Rennes. Nevertheless, he soon abandoned his official career to return to his passion. He died in Rennes in 1813. Our painting probably depicts an interior in Rennes at the end of the Ancien Régime, with a mix of Louis XVI furniture and Far Eastern decorative objects; we don't know what's going on between the characters, or the content of the letter the young boy brings from the back. This painting is perfectly representative of Colin de la Biochaye's art, with its precise depiction of interiors, great attention to detail and a keen eye for detail.
