18th-century French school - Lot 28
18th-century French school Les dames des Halles leaving to fetch the King in Versailles, October 5, 1789 Graphite 28 x 38.2 cm The iconography of the dames des Halles fetching the king (October 5-6, 1789) focuses on revolutionary prints from 1790-1817. The most famous is the engraving by Pierre-Gabriel Berthault after Jean-Louis Prieur le Jeune (1791): a tumultuous procession of women in aprons and bonnets, armed with pikes and cannons, in the rain, with tricolor roundels. Other images show the muddy march, the assault on the palace, Marie-Antoinette frightened. These images exalt feminine popular power and mark the symbolic fall of Versailles.
