Philippe de CHAMPAIGNE (1602-1674), entourage of - Lot 14
Philippe de CHAMPAIGNE (1602-1674), entourage of Guillaume de Lamoignon, Marquis de Basville, First President of the Parliament of Paris (1602-1974) Canvas 90 x 73 cm Guillaume de Lamoignon, Marquis de Basville (1617-1677), was one of the most eminent magistrates of the reign of LouisXIV. The son of a President of the Parliament, he entered the Paris Parliament at an early age as a councillor (1635), became Master of Requests (1644), then First President of the Parliament in 1658. Close to Colbert, he played an active role in judicial reform and the simplification of French law. An influential member of the Compagnie du Saint-Sacrement, he presided over the Chamber of Justice during the Fouquet trial (1661-1664). A magistrate of integrity but firmness, he embodied parliamentary authority in the face of royal power. Portraits of him exist, including a painting by Philippe Lallemand (or attributed to Philippe de Champaigne) in the Château de Versailles; several famous engravings are known, notably by Robert Nanteuil (1659, 1663, 1676).
