Hendricks GOLTZIUS (1558-1617) after - Lot 3
Hendricks GOLTZIUS (1558-1617) after 17th-century Mannerist school Cardinal and Theological Virtues suite of four sanguines 25 x 38 cm The cardinal virtues by Hendrick Goltzius (1558-1617), Dutch Mannerist master engraver, refer to several series of engraved allegories in which he depicts the four cardinal virtues (Prudence, Justice, Strength/Fortitude, Temperance) and sometimes the three theological virtues (Faith, Hope, Charity), often in collaboration with his pupils such as Jacob Matham or Jan Saenredam. Around 1593-1597, Goltzius invented dynamic compositions for these allegorical female figures: Temperance pours water from jug to jug (moderation), Strength tames a lion, Justice holds scales and sword, Prudence with mirror and snake. These engravings, rich in virtuoso drapery, exaggerated musculature and complex symbols, influenced by international mannerism, were widely distributed. Examples include "The Virtues" series (Matham after Goltzius, 1597) and "Three Cardinal Virtues" (Saenredam, 1601: Faith, Hope, Charity).
