Founder in 1904 of the eponymous Copenhagen firm, he made a decisive contribution to the international recognition of Danish design through an original synthesis of Art Nouveau principles and a Nordic sensibility based on sobriety of form, quality of materials and the primacy of craftsmanship. Trained as a sculptor before turning to goldsmithing, Jensen saw silver not simply as a decorative medium, but as an expressive material, capable of translating organic forms inspired by nature. The House of Georg Jensen thus became a laboratory for collective creation, bringing together major designers such as Johan Rohde and Harald Nielsen, and laying the foundations for an aesthetic that would have a lasting influence on modern goldsmithing and design, by reconciling high artistic standards, controlled production and large-scale distribution.
