Virgin and Child in a Landscape
Gray wash over red chalk on vellum.
16.7 x 21.7 cm
Wear
Unidentified collector's mark (L.4582) lower right, indecipherable inscriptions on verso
Our drawing is inspired by an etching by Camilo Procaccini (Bologna 1555- Milan 1629) depicting the repose of the Holy Family, but our artist retains only the main group, inverted, of the Virgin suckling the Child. The sylvan landscape of the print, teeming with vegetation, is replaced here by a column base on the left and a clump of dandelions on the right. Far in the background, a landscape resembling Rome's Porta San Paolo, with Cestius' pyramid and Aurelian Wall. Despite a few awkward proportions, the work is a fine example of fine craftsmanship.
