Published in 1840 under the title: Illustrations of Cairo / by Robert Hay, Esq. of Linplum, drawn on stone by J.C. Bourne, under the supervision of Owen B. Carter, architect. The Illustrations of Cairo (1840)... drawn in stone by J. C. Bourne, under the supervision of Owen B. Carter, architect, is the only work published by Egyptologist Robert Hay (1799-1863). His lithographs of Cairo's streets are often the only records of the city at the time, as many buildings were demolished in the following years. Robert Hay, much less famous than his compatriot and contemporary David Roberts, nevertheless made the greatest contribution to Egyptian archaeology with his two expeditions of 1824-1828 and 1829-1834. As heir to the Earl of Tweeddale, he was wealthy enough to employ a number of artists to join him on his expeditions, supposedly the biggest since Napoleon's. He assembled artists, architects, topographical draftsmen and antiquarians. These young men: Joseph Banoni, Francis Arundale, James Halburton [known as Burton], Charles Laver, Edward Lane, John Wilkinson GB Greenhough, John Wilkinson, George Hoskins and Frederick Catherwood, all of whom became famous in later years, laid the foundations of Egyptian archaeology (Incidents of Travel in Egypt, Arabia Petræa, and the Holy Land John Lloyd Stephens, Courier Corporation, 1996 ). Provenance: collection of HRH Prince Osman Ibrahim of Egypt (1951-2025), son of HRH Amr Ibrahim of Egypt and HRH Princess Nejla Hibetullah Sultan (Necla Osmanoğlu) of Turkey, granddaughter of the last Caliph Abdulmejid II and Sultan Mehmed VI.
