Susse frères (Attributed to), circa 1840. - Lot 135
Susse frères (Attributed to), circa 1840. Very rare pair of ormolu candelabra for the Prince de Joinville (François d'Orléans) in gilded bronze, decorated on the shaft with the coat of arms of the Princes d'Orléans alternating with mermaids, emblems of Admiral François d'Orléans (1818-1900) Prince de Joinville, sailor and son of the last King of the French, Louis-Philippe I. Due to their weight and size, these three-armed gilded bronze candelabra, whose emblems featuring the Orléans coat of arms and mermaids, the symbol of the sea, are exclusively those of the Prince de Joinville and exclude his wife's coat of arms, were part of the furniture intended for use in the Prince's wardroom on the ships he commanded in the French fleet. From May 1839, Prince de Joinville commanded the frigate La Belle Poule, with which he brought the ashes of Emperor Napoleon I back from St. Helena in 1840. Gilded bronze Height: 53 cm
