Jean Marc NATTIER (1685 Paris - 1766) workshop of
The Marechal-Duc de Richelieu in 1732
Canvas
81x60 cm
Comparison: his portrait, Musée Calouste Gulbenkian, Avenida de Berna, Lisbon, Portugal
Louis-François-Armand de Vignerot du Plessis, Duc de Fronsac, then Duc de Richelieu (Paris 1696-1788), Prince de Mortagne, Marquis du Pont-Courlay, Comte de Cosnac, Baron de Barbezieux, Baron de Cozes and Baron de Saujon, Marshal and Peer of France.
He is shown here returning from his ambassadorial post in Vienna (1725-1729) and Dresden. He had just been made a Knight of the Order of the Holy Spirit in 1729 (seated in our painting) and an honorary member of the Académie des Sciences in 1731.
He remains an outstanding figure in more ways than one. Firstly, because of his longevity - he lived to 92 - but also because of his career... and his libertine morals.
