lithograph, numbered 1170/180
43 x 59 cm
Born in Calcutta in 1935, Sakti Burman is an Indian painter and sculptor. He moved to Paris in the 1950s, where he attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He then returned to India, wishing to take a contemporary look at traditional culture, but settled permanently in Paris in the 1960s. His paintings, often resembling decorative frescoes, are characterized by the combination of traditional Indian elements with Western aesthetics. He lives in Paris, but spends his life between two cultures, and injects this multiculturalism into his work, which is marked by spiritual and poetic elements. His paintings have been exhibited alongside those of Chagall, De Chirico, Redon, Magritte and Dali in New York, as well as in India, Japan, Italy and New Zealand.
