The lithographed plates by Louis Haghe, which reproduce the watercolors produced by David Roberts in Egypt, were published in several volumes under the title "Egypte et Nubie" between 1846 and 1849. They are one of the earliest examples of color lithographs whose technique was mastered in the mid-19th century. Haghe was a Scottish artist specializing in topography and architecture, who spent a year touring Egypt in 1838. The resulting prints - the first complete series of views of the monuments, landscapes and peoples of the Near East - were immediately acclaimed for their color and large format.
