Dolmabahçe Palace was built between 1842 and 1853, during the reign of Sultan Abdülmecit I, on the site of the former coastal palace of Beşiktaş, by Armenian architect Garabet Amira Balyan (1800-1866). On completion, the sultans moved to Dolmabahçe, leaving the Topkapı Palace, which lacked the modern luxuries the new palace could provide. Six sultans resided here from 1856, until the abolition of the caliphate in 1924, when the last caliph to live here was Abdülmecit II. This was the year in which a law came into force on March 3, transferring ownership of the palace to the national heritage of the new Turkish Republic.
Provenance: collection of HRH Prince Osman Ibrahim of Egypt (1951-2025),
son of HRH Amr Ibrahim of Egypt and HRH Princess Nejla Hibetullah Sultan (Necla Osmanoğlu) of Turkey,
granddaughter of the last Caliph Abdulmejid II and Sultan Mehmed VI.
