BHUTAN or TIBET. Two Citipati masks (in Tibetan: Dur-kcrod bdag-po). The nostrils are stylized in the shape of a heart and the features of the skulls are highlighted with red pigments. Painted wood. Height: 23 cm. Minor polychromatic flaws. Ex Daniel Cordier collection. Note: The citipatis, among other things, initiate devotees into the terrible forms their souls will have to face during the 49 days following their death, before their future reincarnation (good or bad, depending on karma).
