Master of Jeanne Hervez. - Lot 217
Master of Jeanne Hervez.
Virgin and Child.
The Virgin and Child are retouched by the "Master of the Scandalous Chronicle".
Illumination on vellum; cut from a book of hours. (13.2 x 18 cm)
Illuminations by the "Master of Jeanne Hervez" (15th c.),
with retouching by several of his colleagues.
These richly-bordered illuminations provide astonishing evidence of the collaboration between several artists, and shed new light on the way books of hours were produced.
This master painter is named after the second-hand patron of the Book of Hours now in the Bibliothèque Mazarine (ms. 508).
He was studied by the excellent Isabelle Delaunay (Echanges artistiques entre livres d'heures manuscrits et imprimés produits à Paris, vers 1480-1500).
Provenance :
Old family collection.
Each illumination is preserved in a glass frame.
The frames have not been opened, so the verso of the leaves could not be examined.
