Édouard VERSCHAFFELT (1874-1955) - Lot 82
Édouard VERSCHAFFELT (1874-1955) Maghrebi women and children, circa 1930 Oil on canvas Signed lower right 80 x 100 cm This lot will be presented at the sale with a loan frame (not delivered to the buyer). Of Belgian origin, Édouard Verschaffelt studied at the Beaux-Arts in Antwerp and Ghent, where he focused on historical subjects. After a first visit to the Maghreb in 1919, he returned to Algeria in 1924 and married a young woman from the Ouled Sidi Brahim tribe. Far from the cities, surrounded by his Saharan family, who also served as his models, Verschaffelt painted traditional family scenes. His realistic style and intimate knowledge of his subject distanced him from the clichés and stereotypes of idealized Orientalism. The artist did not join the Société des peintres orientalistes, but chose to exhibit in Algerian galleries and salons. One of his works, La Caravane, intérieur de Bou-Saâda, is in the Musée d'Alger.
