19th century FRENCH SCHOOL
Mademoiselle Georges with turban and fan
Canvas
65 x 54 cm
Mademoiselle Georges began her career at the Comédie Française under the age of sixteen as Clytemnestre in Racine's Iphigénie. Beautiful, she enjoyed Napoleon's protection and distinguished herself in powerful roles, impressing audiences. In 1808, she went to Russia and stayed in St. Petersburg for five years, before joining the Comédiens Français troupe in Dresden, where an imperial order made her resume her position. After the Restoration, she left the Comédie in 1817 to perform a number of roles in Brussels and Paris. She became the interpreter and champion of the new school, and enjoyed success for the rest of her life.
