Beautiful talé hut frame, Kanak, New Caledonia - Lot 15
Beautiful talé hut frame, Kanak, New Caledonia It is concave, following the shape of the trunk from which it is carved. The upper part features a face with a disproportionately large nose and mouth, sculpted with great power. The rest of the surface is adorned with geometric motifs. The doorframes, which come in pairs, are the symbolic protectors of the hut. They are sometimes reused after the owner has died and the hut has been abandoned, and are often recut to form, for example, the walls or lid of a sarcophagus, which seems to be the case with this example. Wood, probably houp, slightly damaged by xylophagous insects. H = 111 cm Provenance: Charles RATTON
