TOUR DU MONDE (Le). - Lot 518
TOUR DU MONDE (Le). New travel journal published under the direction of Mr. Edouard Charton and illustrated by our most famous artists. Paris, Hachette. 1861-1913. 53 volumes in-4, publisher's red half-chagrin [then burgundy half-maroquin], spines with ornate faux-nerves, gilt edges (period bindings). Almost complete collection of this famous travel magazine very richly illustrated. Le Tour du Monde was published in 2 series. The first one, which appeared from 1860 to 1894, is uniformly bound in its publisher's binding. The false title of the 2nd semester 1870 is missing. The year 1871 was never published. The second series appeared from 1895 to July 1914 and is presented here in a burgundy half-maroquin binding. Without the first semester of 1914. "The nineteenth century was truly the century of the difference of the finite world. A privileged witness of the discovery or the thorough exploration of the world - whether it is Europe, Africa, Asia, America or Oceania: a weekly review - the Tour du Monde - which, from 1860 to 1914, will present more than 700 discoveries, explorations, or travel reports written by more than 500 authors... This magazine has become rare for two reasons: on the one hand, it is almost impossible to study this period without referring to it; on the other hand, its innumerable woodcuts, many of which are full-page, its maps, its portraits, its drawings, constitute today a truly exceptional iconographic documentation." (Huret (J.-E.), La Revue Le Tour du Monde, 1860-1914, Étude d'ensemble et tables. 1977 - vol. attached to the set, in-12, red half-maroquin). Slight rubbing.
