PITTON de TOURNEFORT. - Lot 506
PITTON de TOURNEFORT. Elements of Botany or Method to know plants. Paris, 1698. In-4, (9) ff; 470 pp; 61 pp; (11) ff; (18) bl. ff, 18th century full calf, spine with ornate nerves, red morocco title-piece, modern case. Very legible handwritten copy of the famous work of Piton de Tournefort, published in 1694, in 3 volumes (one volume of text and 2 volumes of plates). The copyist used 2 types of ink, one brown, the other clearer. This manuscript was written in 1698 in Paris, as stated on the title page. "In his Elements of Botany, admirably written and described, Pitton de Tournefort classified the plants according to their different parts, examining the flowers, leaves, roots, stems and flavor. If Linné modified this too strict system, he would not fail to pay tribute to Tournefort, whose classification considerably enlightened botany at the beginning of the 18th century". Pitton de Tournefort was a professor at the Jardin des plantes, then at the Collège Royal. In addition to his numerous writings on botany, he wrote a Relation d'un voyage au Levant, published in 1717. Small stains and old handwritten signature Antoine Barral on the title page. Binding restored.
