HERBIER. - LAREVELLIERE (Victorin). - Lot 481
HERBIER. - LAREVELLIERE (Victorin). Botanical and picturesque album of Italy. 1844. One manuscript vol. of 174 pp. and 1 f. of table; and one herbarium vol.: 2 vols. in-4, black half-chagrin with corners, ribbed spine with title pushed in cold (Rel. of the period). In this unpublished manuscript on Italy, the former deputy of Maine-et-Loire Victorin Lareveillère (1791-1867) describes the 6-month touristic and botanical trip, from December 28, 1843 to June 2, 1844, that he made with his cousin Ossian de Larevellière-Lépeaux. The account, situating the 68 species collected, details the conditions of the trip and describes the cities and landscapes crossed (Pisa, Pompeii, Florence, Sicily, Palermo...). At the edge of the crater of Vesuvius: "The magnificence of this place could not be described; the soul is seized of fear and admiration for the great works of nature, this power of the creative God, with the aspect of this sheaf of fire and smoke, which escapes with the noise of thunder". Very legible manuscript in black ink, and the names of the species written in red ink. It was composed for Madame Émilie de Coulaine (with her figure on the first plates). The herbarium presents the 68 botanical specimens on 47 plates, with labels mentioning the name in Latin and French, the place and the date of collection: the hairy Cardamine was collected in the quarries of Carrara, the two-leafed Scilla on the shores of the lake of Albano, the curved cyclamen in Capo di Monte... With a map of Italy and 2 canvas plans (Rome and Naples, with wormholes). Wormholes on pl. 11 to 17. Bindings rubbed.
