YELLOW CRUISE. - IACOVLEFF (Alexander). - Lot 195
YELLOW CRUISE. - IACOVLEFF (Alexander). Portrait of Mr. Hou. Urumki, Nov. 1, 1931. Pastel and red chalk on paper; lower left, inscription in Chinese characters in Indian ink; on the right, signature and Chinese stamp of Iacovleff, with place and date. On the front, handwritten label from the exhibition at the Charpentier Gallery in 1933, with number "285", and on the reverse handwritten label with "285" and identification. A handwritten label on the back indicates that the man is Mr. Hou, guide attached to the Mission and delegated by the Government of Sinkiang (Chinese Turkestan). This portrait was indeed made in Urumki, Uyghur province of Xinjiang, one of the five autonomous regions of the People's Republic of China. The "China" group of the 3rd Citröen Mission, led by Victor Point, had been taken prisoner by the warlord King Shu-Jen, for 3 months, before being rescued by the rest of the expedition. The long inscription, with a red stamp, testifies to the friendship between Mr. Hou and Iacovleff; the artist made two portraits, one of which he gave to Mr. Hou and this second one on which the guide inscribed an ex-dono in Chinese commemorating his meeting with the Citröen Mission group. Superb portrait, which appeared under n° 285 at the exhibition of Iacovleff's Asian works, at the Charpentier gallery in 1933.
