General history Gilbert POILLERAT (1902-19880), French decorator and master ironworker. He initially specialized in chiseling and painting, but having discovered iron art, Poillerat devoted himself entirely to it for the rest of his career. Among his most remarkable creations are the Grand Master's collar of the Order of the Liberation given to General de Gaulle in 1947, the entrance gates of the Palais Chaillot and the Collège Jules-Ferry in Maison-Alfort, the ironwork of the Grande Synagogue in Strasbourg, etc. He was greatly inspired by the ironwork of the 18th century, because according to him this period had the most elegant forms and motifs; "The arabesques of his balustrades made him known to the public. They are, like a winged writing, crossed with memories and soft visions of childhood" (Marina Paul-Bousquet, Gilbert Poillerat in Images de France, n° 98, July 1943).
