BEAUTIFUL PHULKARI - Lot 213
BEAUTIFUL PHULKARI Punjab, early 20th century Cotton embroidered with polychrome silk, with geometric decoration, the main field decorated with diamonds, the ends in garlands of stylized flowers. Size : 224 x 143 cm This textile is a typical Punjabi veil that is called bagh (garden) or phulkari (floral work) depending on the space occupied by the embroidery on the cotton surface. It is worn on the head, placed under the triangle pattern (ghunghat) visible on one of the long sides. This ghunghat is embroidered with wedding jewelry motifs. These veils were made by the bride's family, especially the grandmother, to be worn for the wedding ceremony, or during festivals. The designs vary depending on the region of production. For a discussion of baghs and phulkaris see Embroidered truths, Karun Thakar Collection (http://www.karuncollection.com/embroidered-truths/ accessed 8/11/22) See also a very similar phulkari bagh in the Philadelphia Museum of Art (1998-102-53).
