RARE HANGING (PICHHVAI) - Lot 212
RARE HANGING (PICHHVAI) Probably Nathdwara, Rajasthan, late 19th century Painted cotton, in the form of an arch, intended to decorate a chapel, two European-style pilasters support a lintel decorated with symbols of Vishnu, wear. Size : 165 x 115 cm The tradition of painted textiles of this type (pichhvai) is particularly associated with the cult of Shri Nathji, a form of Krishna, at the Nathdwara temple in Rajasthan. These large painted cottons are usually hung behind an image of the god. Here, the arch is decorated with symbols of Vishnu (the conch and the disc) and four footprints between the moon and the sun, two of which are those of the god Vishnu. The arch is supported by two pilasters with acanthus leaf capitals in a very European style and unusual in this religious context.
