SHRI NATHJI AND THE ANNAKUTA FALL FESTIVAL - Lot 194
SHRI NATHJI AND THE ANNAKUTA FALL FESTIVAL Nathdwara, Kotah, North India, late 19th century Pigments and gold on paper, the idol (murti) of Shri Nathji richly dressed inside a chapel, surrounded by two priests, other religious (tilkayat and goswamis) and members of the Vallabhacharya family represented in the medallions, red borders. Size : 22,5 x 29,5 cm (painting) This painting comes from the Nathdwara temple south of Jaipur, founded in 1672 by the followers of the saint Vallabhacharya (1479-1531). The worship of Shri Nathji, a form of Krishna, is punctuated by a complex ritual calendar. Here, the autumn festival Annakuta is identifiable with the offering of rice laid out on the mountain at the feet of the deity. It is an evocation of the sacred mount Govardhan, which Krishna raises to protect the villagers from the flood. The hand of the idol is raised, evoking the famous scene. A similar painting is in the British Museum (1940,0713,0.67).
