Beautiful manuscript of 284 leaves, dated 1184 A.H. (1769)." Size : 21 x 14,5 cm (binding) Provenance: Frederick North, Earl of Guilford (1766-1827) This text is the first Ottoman history of the Americas by an unknown Turkish author, written in the 1580's. It is also known as Tarih-i hind gharbi ("History of the West Indies") and Hadis-i nev. This work, popular in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, was printed by Ibrahim Müteferrika in 1730, from which he made 500 copies, one of which is in the present collection (lot 79). This text seems to be the main source of information about the Americas circulating in the Ottoman Empire from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century. See Thomas D. Goodrich, "Tarihi-i Hind-i Garbi: An Ottoman Book on the New World," Journal of the American Oriental Society, April-June 1987, vol. 107, no. 2, p. 317. This manuscript belonged to Frederic North (1766-1827), Fifth Earl of Guilford and son of Lord North, Prime Minister of George III. This collector of books and manuscripts is known for his travels through North Africa and the Ottoman Empire.
