LAYLA AND MAJNUN. Layla wa Majnun, Persian world, 17th and 1 - Lot 49
LAYLA AND MAJNUN. Layla wa Majnun, Persian world, 17th and 18th century Persian manuscript of 160 leaves, text in black nasta'liq organized diagonally on two columns framed by a thin gilt ribbon and a blue fillet, illustrated with 32 paintings probably dating from the 18th century, late Persian binding, in black morocco with painted decoration, numerous restorations, seals and possession marks. Size : 23,5 x 14 cm (binding) This manuscript is interesting for the unusual style of its illustrations. The paintings seem to be slightly later than the text, probably dating from the 18th century. They are executed in a style with a strong Persian influence, which is particularly evident in the costumes and styles of the turbans and headdresses. The provincial style and the rudimentary color palette suggest perhaps a workshop located between Iran and India, such as Afghanistan or Pakistan. Two manuscripts formerly in the collection of Prof. D.S. Robertson indeed show a kinship in style and palette: primarily a Nizami manuscript executed in Balkh in 1669 and to a second extent a Shahnama, executed by two different artists with Indian names, also attributed to the seventeenth century (Christie's South Kensington, 11 October 2013, lots 805 and 810).
