'Ali, Safavid Iran, dated AH 940/1532 In Persian, 50 leaves, brown morocco of the Qajar period with embossed decoration, frontispiece decorated with a Safavid painting cut from another manuscript and inserted in an illuminated medallion, possession mark dated 1274 H/1857, colophon dated 940 H/1532 copied on a leaf dating from the 19th century. Size : 30.5 x 19 cm (binding) Dawlatshah's Tadhkirat al-shu'ara is an important biographical dictionary of many poets. It was completed in 1487 and dedicated to Mir 'Ali Shir, the famous vizier at the court of Sultan Husayn Bayqara of Herat (r. 1469-1506). The text was used by many later biographers and the German translation by Von Hammer-Purgstall in 1818 particularly influenced the studies of Persian literature of the time. Two eighteenth-century copies are in the Morgan Library & Museum (MS M.1185) and the British Library (IO Islamic 3777). Our manuscript was copied 25 years after the author's death and can be considered an important copy.
