MANUSCRIT. - RUFFIEUX (Louis). Varia. 1888. 1888-1900. In-8, - Lot 590
MANUSCRIT. - RUFFIEUX (Louis). Varia. 1888. 1888-1900. In-8, old handwritten vellum (Binding of the time). 197 pp. Precious manuscript on the mushrooms of Fribourg, abundantly illustrated in pencil. The writing is fine and confident, in black ink (with some notes in red or blue ink, and some pages in blue); the notes and drawings leave no blank pages and cover up to the second counterpart, paginated 197. Entitled Varia, it opens with an index of the exotic flora, which occupies the first 19 pages (from acacia to wig-waga). Nevertheless, from this index, descriptions of mushrooms are mixed in, with for each one, the pencil representation opposite. From page 20, the organization of the manuscript evolves: 2 or 3 descriptions occupy each page, and are each accompanied by several views and sections in pencil. Then, some pages entirely covered with numbered drawings refer to pages of notes and descriptions (e.g. pp. 70-71). Started in 1888, the manuscript, without any particular classification, was enriched progressively with notes or additional drawings (some legends are dated 1889, 1890, 1900...), and the references to various pages and numbers testify of deepened research and renewed study; names given by other mycologists, and various considerations were added: "rare", "rather common", "viscous in rainy weather"... Louis Ruffieux (1848-1909) was a self-taught naturalist and humanist from Fribourg. He was an experienced mycologist and, from 1903 onwards, he worked as a "mushroom inspector". He wrote numerous articles and published a book on mushroom cooking: La Préparation méthodique des champignons. Fribourg, 1904 (Mykolibri, Addenda, 1824 a). The Museum of Natural History of Fribourg has several watercolors of mushrooms by his hand. Some stains and foxing. Stamp (?) scratched on the title.
