ALBUM OF 111 ORIGINAL WATERCOLORS OF MUSHROOMS. England, Lan - Lot 540
ALBUM OF 111 ORIGINAL WATERCOLORS OF MUSHROOMS. England, Lancaster, end of the 19th century. In-folio, fawn calf, gilt filets and cold roulette, spine decorated, red morocco title page, gilt edges (Binding of the period). 61 ff. mounted on tabs. Album containing 111 original watercolors, gummed, of Lancaster mushrooms (Lancashire, county in the northwest of England); of various sizes and executed on strong paper, they have been laminated and framed with a black fillet; each sheet contains one to six watercolors. Of very good workmanship, they sometimes present on the same sheet various views. The captions are written in ink or sometimes added in pencil; they are dated from September 1872 to May 1885, but most of them date from 1873-1874. Most of them are numbered, so the set seems to belong to a large collection. Attached to the front of the volume is a card signed M. J. Berkeley, who was asked to name the drawings and thus confirm their quality; he may have been the author of these handwritten captions. Miles Joseph Berkeley (1803-1889) described many species of fungi and is considered the father of British mycology. He produced a herbarium of nearly 10,000 species of fungi (of which he described about 5,000), preserved in the collections of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. Modern bookplate: J. Nash-Wortham. Some scuffing.
