ALI-BAB (Henri BABINSKI, under the pseudonym of). Practical - Lot 442
ALI-BAB (Henri BABINSKI, under the pseudonym of). Practical Gastronomy. Culinary studies, followed by the treatment of obesity of the gourmands. Paris, Ernest Flammarion, 1912. Fort in-4, red morocco, triple fillet, spine decorated with the same, number L. D. at the foot, interior lace, gilt edges, case (Binding of the period). False title, title, portrait, 636 pp. Second edition, partly original, of this very complete recipe book, opening on a long history of gastronomy. It is decorated with a portrait of the author after the painting by Eugène Cadel. "Mr. Babinski's dishes are far from being "within the reach of everyone" as he claims in his preface. One must be rich to buy the ingredients and knowledgeable to make them" (Oberlé). First published in 1907, this was the first work to treat obese people (10 pages in fine). Beautiful copy on strong paper, entirely mounted on tabs. It was luxuriously bound with the figure of Léontine Delahaye, recipient of the autograph of the author who thanks her for her "precious collaboration". (Attached is a letter signed Gaston Sainsot, dated 1951, who regrets not being able to explain who this Miss Delahaye is, even after having questioned Curnonsky). Rubbing to the nerves and hinges. Spine slightly faded. Oberlé, Fastes, 274.
