GRIMOD DE LA REYNIÈRE (Alexandre-Balthazar-Laurent). Journal - Lot 361
Rare monthly review, gathering recipes, historical notices, anecdotes, correspondence with subscribers, poems, songs, theater, riddles, charades... The subscribers received 12 deliveries per year (the notebooks were not sold alone). The main editor was Grimod de La Reynière, who wished to use this monthly publication to report on the many gourmet inventions that he received and thus contribute to the improvement of products. He was assisted by the chansonniers Gouffé and Desaugiers, Piis, E. de Jouy, Marié de Saint-Ursin, Ducray-Duminil... The editorial committee met on the 20th of each month at the Rocher de Cancale (the best Parisian restaurant for oysters and poultry), and the editors paid the bill! From 1808, Le Journal became L'Épicurien français or Les Dîners du Caveau moderne. The first 28 volumes are illustrated with an engraved frontispiece (portrait of Grimod for volume I). Rare collection practically complete: only 2 months are missing, May 1811 and May 1815. Copies of famous collections did not have as many volumes (Walterspiel, 37 vols. No. 134 of Oberlé's Fastes catalog; Viel, 28 vols; Lambert, 10 vols; Schraemli, 8 vols). An elegant copy, in a sober binding. Vicaire, 467 - Oberlé, Fastes, 200.
