BALINGHEM (Antoine de). Apresdinees et propos de table contr - Lot 178
BALINGHEM (Antoine de). Apresdinees et propos de table contre l'excez au boire, et au manger pour vivre longuement sainement et sainctement. Saint-Omer, Charles Boscart, 1624. In-8, blue morocco, spine decorated, double cold fillet on the boards, large inner lace, gilt edges on marbling (H. Duru). (12) ff. n. ch., (680) pp. numbered 679. Second edition, as rare as the original, "enriched by the author with several new speeches, & beautiful stories. With twelve proposals to pass pleasantly & honestly the days of the Quaresmeaux". This pleasant collection, through facetious dialogues, denounces, according to various anecdotes, drunkards and boozers, men or women. The theologian demonstrates that drunkenness is a mortal sin; the canonist enumerates the laws and sanctions against drunkards; the doctor explains that it is to endanger one's health; the historian cites some famous drunkards; while the moral philosopher discusses this theme, etc... "Our Jesuit is not only interested in the popular class: he also accuses the magistrate of compromising the interests of the city; the judge, those of his justiciables; the confessor, of exposing himself - when he has drunk - to betray the secrets of the confessional. The work is also a very curious and significant document on the customs and habits of the Flemish people" (Oberlé). Antoine de Balinghem (1571-1630) studied philosophy in Italy, then taught it in Douai and Louvain; he translated many Italian and Spanish books. Spine slightly faded.
