In-12, sewn in parchment cover. 64 pp. Rare first edition of this booklet of the statutes of the Order of the Medusa, composed by Vauvré (1647-1724), Intendant of the Port of Toulon and Grand Prior of the Order of the Medusa; a second edition appeared in 1712 (Lyon, Laurens). The illustration includes a frontispiece "drawn and engraved by Frère Virtuose", a vignette on the title (repeated in the text p. 28), representing a jellyfish, and 2 vignettes in the text. This gastronomic and bacchanalian society was founded before 1690, in Marseille by Sieur Hurault, Marquis de Vibray. Brothers and sisters met every month to drink joyfully, sing and versify; they did not have to pronounce family names and all obeyed the order of "petrification" while a member drank, under penalty of paying a fine to the cashier of the Order. Very rare work. Handwritten notes on the back of the first and last leaves, corners corroded, wetness. Annotated parchment, stained. Vicar, 7 - not in reference bibliographies.
