SERRES (Olivier de). The Theatre of Agriculture and the Meas - Lot 158
SERRES (Olivier de). The Theatre of Agriculture and the Measurement of Fields. Paris, Jamet Métayer, July 1, 1600. In-folio, green morocco, gilt roulette in the frame, flower at the corners, spine ribbed and decorated, tan morocco title, gilt edges (Binding of the end of the 18th century). (8) ff. including the title-frontispiece engraved by Mallery, 1004 pp., (10) ff. (table and completion of printing). First edition of the most important treatise on agriculture ever composed, by one of the first French agronomists, Olivier de Serres. Born in Villeneuve-de-Berg, Vivarais, in 1539, Olivier de Serres quickly experimented with various studies on his farm in Pradel: he introduced madder, hops, and corn, attempted to extract sugar from beets, and developed mulberry plantations for silk production. Edition illustrated with a magnificent frontispiece showing Henri IV enthroned in a garden overlooking a triumphal arch, 8 woodcut vignettes at the head of the chapters, and 16 woodcuts in the text representing flowerbeds (VI). In the Théâtre d'agriculture, he analyzes the different agronomic activities, the organization of the domain and its economic management. But this treatise is also important for the history of food: it deals with bread and vegetables (II), wine (III), cheese (IV); the eighth place is devoted to "the use of food": provisions (chap. 1), baking, salting of meats, preservation of fruits, jams (chap. 2), distillation (chap. 4), recipes for wines. There are 19 editions until 1675. Rubbing to the binding, corners dulled. Small wetnesses, restorations to many leaves. Completed printing in facsimile. Despite these paper defects, this copy remains attractive in its full green morocco binding. Attached : FRAITOT (V.). Olivier de Serres. Book of reading for the use of schools.
