PISANELLI (Baldassare). Traicté de la nature des viandes et - Lot 142
PISANELLI (Baldassare). Traicté de la nature des viandes et du boire : avec leurs vertus, vices, remèdes et histoires naturelles : utile & delectable à tout bon esprit. Arras, Gilles Bauduyn, 1596. In-16, 19th century red jansenist morocco, inner lace, gilt edges (Clæssens). Title, (7) ff. 240 pp. and (4) ff. of index. Rare French first edition of one of the greatest Italian treatises on gastronomy, a real bestseller in the 16th century. It is due to Antoine de Pouillon (1560-1606), canon of Saint-Auber de Cambrai: "his translation is preceded by an epistle where he defends himself from dealing with a subject "unsuitable for his habit", underlining that this text, much more dietetic than gastronomic, is only a "continuous instruction to sobriety"" (Livres en bouche). The first edition appeared in folio in Rome in 1583 and is not known to Vicaire. The first translation into Latin appeared in 1592 (Geneva). A physician from Bologna, the author describes in this treatise of dietetics fruits, liquors, meats, game, fish, milk, cheeses... according to their criteria of election (choice of the best product), virtues, vices, remedies, degrees (of humidity or heat), ages, complexions (best time for consumption), and natural history; the last chapters are devoted to wine and drink. A superb copy, from the library of P.J.C. Orsi, with bookplate (I, 1989, n° 386). Vicaire, 684 - Livres en bouche, 57 - Simon (Gastronomica et Bacchica), Oberlé (Fastes): other editions.
