Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712 - 1778) - Lot 174
Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712 - 1778) Writer, Philosopher, Musician Half-body bust in terra cotta Total height : 89 cm ; width : 58 cm. Quadrangular pedestal in red Levanto marble Height : 20 cm 20 cm high (small visible accidents and spalls) The most famous bust of Rousseau is undoubtedly the one exhibited by Houdon at the salon of 1779 (n°220), one year after the death of the philosopher. Before proposing different versions of it: French style, wearing a wig and a costume of the time, natural style or even antique style. This unpublished portrait, most likely executed before Houdon's work, is an exception. Although he lived in Lyon, not far from the Dauphiné, it is more likely that the sculptor relied on an engraved source to create the portrait of Rousseau.
