Engraved Bamboo - Kanak - New Caledonia For the Kanak people, engraved bamboos are part of the collective memory; they relate specific events, important facts of traditional life, but also legends and myths, and each of them represents a fragment of the Great Kanak History. Each of the scenes and elements engraved on each bamboo was part of a unique story, but none of these stories could ever be collected. The superb example presented here shows in particular the large central alley of a village decorated with coconut trees and characters and on either side of the two large huts surmounted by their ridge spires, and a multitude of other scenes with marine beings such as large rays, turtles and decapods. This bamboo is also decorated with a frieze of rifles testifying to the important contacts with Europeans around 1860, notably in the Canala region. The tradition of making these visual archives was interrupted in the early years of the 20th century. H : 106 cm. Bamboo, beautiful patina of use, excellent condition. Provenance : Collected by the vice-admiral Laurent Marin-Darbel ( 1849-1928 ) who was stationed in New Caledonia in the 1870s. Expert : Johann Levy Expert CNE johann.levy@free.fr
