Russia/France, the Holy Alliance France, England and Turkey - Lot 229
Russia/France, the Holy Alliance France, England and Turkey against Russia (English legend), 1854 London A/THE HOLY ALLIANCE - LA SAINTE ALLIANCE French and English soldiers hugging each other in front of a cannon and flags, signature PUNCH D. - ALLAN and MOORE F. and at the top (date) In a laurel wreath: ENGLAND AND FRANCE/ UNITED/ TO DEFEND/ THE OPRESSED/ AND AVENGE/ INSULTED EUROPE Status: SPL - Rare : Material : Pewter Diameter: 44.5 mm - Weight: 26.72 g - Axis: 12 h references: Eimer.1489 - cf.Coll.1659 - BHM.2536 The Holy Alliance is part of the Crimean Campaign (1854-1855). It was the origin of the conflict, a surrealist quarrel between the French Emperor Napoleon III and Tsar Nicholas I. Each wanted to ensure the exclusive protection of the Holy Places of Jerusalem, an integral part of the Turkish Empire. As the Sultan of Istanbul seems to give preference to the Catholics represented by Napoleon III, Tsar Nicholas I proposes to England to share the decaying Turkish Empire. England refused for fear that Russia would acquire too much influence in the Mediterranean and the East. In displeasure, the czar attacks and destroys the Turkish fleet in the Black Sea on his own initiative. He also invades the Romanian provinces of the Turkish Empire. The emperor of the French, who had proclaimed at his advent: Empire is peace!, is driven to war by his young wife, the beautiful Eugenie de Montijo, eager to promote Catholic interests. Napoleon III and the English government of Queen Victoria made common cause with the Sultan. It was the first time since the coronation of Eleanor of Aquitaine and Henry II Plantagenet, 700 years earlier, that the two nations prepared to fight together. Invoking the preservation of the Ottoman Empire, the two allies sent their fleet into the Black Sea. Splendid specimen endowed with all its brilliance, rare in its present state.
