In-folio, black morocco, gilt medallion in the center of the boards, spine ribbed, gilt head, int. framing of the same marbled, lining and endpapers of orange moire, cover and spine cons. (Yseux, successor of Thierry-Simier). Beautiful edition of the first publication of the Memoirs of the French archaeological delegation in Afghanistan. It is illustrated with 48 plates out of text, some of them in color and sketches in text; they represent the famous Buddhas, dynamited by the Taliban in March 2001, rock paintings... Hackin, curator of the Guimet Museum, was part of the Yellow Cruise expedition. Unique copy with the proofs of the text with handwritten corrections, bound at the beginning of the volume. Autograph letter from Hackin to Count René Philipon, dated Dec. 15, 1927. Hinges cracked.
